Feet First is available to all elementary schools
and to any other child-oriented groups such as scouts, day camps
etc. The diversity of the program makes it appealing for groups
interested in teaching their students about the environment,
physical health, or community awareness.
Why Would Feet First
Be Good For My Students?
Feet First is an educational outreach program that teaches children
the positive health, environmental and community benefits of using
active transportation. Feet First introduces children to the idea
that there is life beyond the backseat of a car and that
participating in it by walking, riding bikes, using the bus and
other alternate modes, we can all begin to take better care of our
environment, our communities and our physical health. Our program
gives children the knowledge and skills to make important choices as
they grow into adulthood thereby raising a new generation in tune
with the environment and aware of our place within it. Through a
series of interactive learning sessions, workbook activities and
hands on experiments, Feet First illustrates the links between
alternate modes, healthy bodies, responsible environmentalism and
strong communities.
What Can I Expect
From Feet First?
Students receive workbooks with hand on activities and take home
assignments for each section. Each day focuses on a different
alternate mode and explores the positive environmental effects of
that mode. In addition, the program addresses a different
environmental concern each day such as global warming or air
pollution. Children are encouraged to ask questions and
presenter/student interactions is actively encouraged.
How Can I Bring Feet
First to My Classroom?
The program is offered free to schools and groups and is conducted
by trained volunteers. The two-day, half-hour-a-day program is
thought on two levels: grades 2-3 and grades 4-5. to sign up for the
